In 2008, Birch Cove Group founders Robert Bjork and Michael Brown became deeply dissatisfied with the financial industry’s response to the economic downturn. Specifically, we felt advisors weren’t doing enough to answer clients’ questions and restore their confidence.

Wealth management (WM) combines three major components. Virtually all financial advisors offer investment consulting (IC), but we provide advanced planning (AP) as well as relationship management (RM). That’s what makes Birch Cove Group so different.

INVESTMENT CONSULTING
We believe that wealth preservation means much more than keeping what you have and finding new ways to enhance it. Wealth preservation means freedom — to do what you want to do, and to live the life you envision for yourself. However you define it, financial freedom comes from incisive investment consulting that aligns with your personal goals, time frame and tolerance for risk.
Birch Cove Group delivers innovative investment management that is custom-tailored to a comprehensive wealth management effort. What most differentiates our approach is a firm belief that you should be compensated for the risk you take.
To this end, we evaluate and manage market risk and return through asset allocation, using forward-looking assumptions designed to maximize potential return at the level of risk you choose. We believe skilled fund managers should generate alpha (risk adjusted performance) in any market, and we expect high-alpha portfolios to provide incremental returns when the market rises and reduce the downside during declines. We also favor risk budgeting, a practice that separates the risk in a portfolio into its constituent components in order to manage total risk more effectively.
ALTERNATIVE INVESTMENTS
Traditionally, investors diversify portfolios by including several core asset classes, such as stocks and bonds. Meaningful diversification, however, is a constant challenge. To address this, institutional investors commonly take advantage of several nontraditional asset classes, also known as alternative investments. Today, more kinds of alternative investments are open to individual investors as well, offering the potential to generate returns with a low (or lower) correlation to traditional components of a portfolio.
The universe of alternative investment strategies is extremely broad. Birch Cove Group continually monitors the alternative investments landscape to select opportunities and make them available to clients. Alternative strategies include hedge funds, managed futures, private equity, real estate, commodities and tangible assets, such as equipment for the rail, maritime and energy industries.

Michael Brown, Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Birch Cove Group, Ltd., is a Registered Principal of Raymond James Financial Services, Inc., a Registered Investment Advisor Representative and an Investment Management Consultant. He began his career in 1985, and brings more than 25 years of experience to his work as a financial advisor.
Mike knows exactly what is required to recognize, address and ultimately solve clients’ financial challenges. He believes truly comprehensive wealth management requires a deep client relationship as well as a complete understanding of the client’s financial goals and dreams.
Mike also works with a network of professionals in a variety of disciplines, including income tax, trusts and estates, risk management and charitable giving, among others. His relationships with these specialists enable Mike to help clients find the most suitable approach to any challenge.
Mike, whose father was a pioneer in the financial planning industry, grew up in the Twin Cities. He lives there today with his wife, Lynn, and three children. Lynn is an active volunteer and non-profit board member. The family shares many interests, including sailing, skiing and golf.
